When Japanese calligraphy, modern light art and a spectacular water projection come together to create a unique artistic experience, reliable technology is essential. At this year's performance Circle of Life, a Tsurumi high-pressure pump provided the foundation for an impressive eight-metre-high water screen that served as the projection surface for the live show.
The event took place in May as part of the 58th Cherry Blossom Festival at Parksee in Hamburg's Planten un Blomen park. Organised at the invitation of the German Japanese Society in Hamburg, the performance brought together renowned Japanese calligraphy master Koho Kurihara and the artist duo cc2, who combined live calligraphy with light, sound and water projection to create an immersive multimedia installation.
A key element of the performance was the artificial water wall used as a projection screen. To achieve the required effect, water had to be distributed evenly across a width of several metres and maintained at a constant pressure throughout the performance. This was accomplished using a Tsurumi LH311W high-pressure pump in combination with a specially designed baffle plate, creating a thin and uniform sheet of water reaching a height of eight metres.
The LH311W is typically used for demanding drainage applications. Equipped with an 11 kW motor, a three-inch discharge connection and a robust construction, it delivers the high pressure and continuous performance required for challenging pumping tasks. Models in the LH series can achieve delivery heads of up to 216 metres, making them suitable for both industrial applications and technically demanding special projects such as this artistic installation.
The Circle of Life performance demonstrated that proven engineering can support not only construction and infrastructure projects but also ambitious creative concepts. By delivering a constant flow at stable pressure throughout the event, the Tsurumi LH311W helped transform an artistic vision into a captivating live experience.
